Understanding Your Options

We’ll help you get the answers you need to make a thoughtful decision.
Types of Abortion
Abortion ends a pregnancy either through medical abortion (the abortion pill) or a surgical procedure. The method used depends on how far along your pregnancy is and your medical history.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
Medical abortion usually involves two drugs. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone; the second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel pregnancy tissue.
This abortion method is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation.
Cramping and vaginal bleeding, which can be severe, will occur as the pregnancy is expelled from the body. Other side effects may include:
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Fever, chills, headache, fatigue
Possible risks include:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Incomplete abortion (when tissue remains in the uterus, requiring a follow-up procedure)
- Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs do not work
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital setting using suction and/or surgical instruments to end and remove the pregnancy. Technique varies by gestational age.
Common side effects may include:
- Cramping
- Spotting or light vaginal bleeding for several days
Possible risks include:
- Damage to the cervix
- Uterine perforation (when a surgical tool pokes a hole)
- Infection
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall, which can affect future fertility
- Incomplete abortion, potentially requiring a surgical procedure
